NOCHEVIEJA EN BERCHULES
Some of you may know ? The Spanish tradition of seeing in the New Year, on New Years Eve?
Traditionally it’s Cava ( champagne) at midnight, and 12 grapes, one for each toll of the bell, ( great fun trying to stuff all that in your mouth in 12 seconds, without chocking or being sick) oh well, at least it’s only once a year right?? Or is it ??? then they dance the night away, wearing red underwear for good luck!
But its August! Not December!
I always said the Spanish have some strange traditions!!
So here we are in Bérchules, Las Alpujarras, Granada.
To celebrate New Years Eve in August!!
Why August?
Its because some years ago there was a power cut during the December 31st New Years celebrations, it was then decided, that from then this small village in the Alpujarras would have the whole shenanigan in August instead.
So every year, always the first Saturday in August, sees the whole town and it’s visitors enjoy Christmas festivities, including The Three Kings, on horse back, gifts, thrown at the crowd from, a Donkey wearing saddle bags, nativity, reindeer hats, live band, markets and of course a giant Santa.
But the most bazaar of all, after a scorching hot August day, Snow falls at the stroke of midnight !!
So be it artificial, but never the less Snow!! Followed by a party
until dawn!!
