MAURITANIA
The Islamic republic of Mauritania ::
Mauritania roughly translates to Land of the moors and Islamic republic roughly translates to two weeks without beer!!
It’s one of the least visited countries in the world and lies below Western Sahara in Morroco and above Senegal.. it’s mainly desert ( making it extremely difficult to navigate) and can be very dangerous in remote areas due to presence of the taliban and banditry, which put travelers at risk from Kidnappings ( the
last recorded kidnapping was back in 2003) The result, Mauritania is now heavily policed with ( annoying check points every 30 mins or so on the road between Nouadhibou and Nouakchott all 6 hr 11 min (480.3 km) of it!! ) That said most governments don’t recommended all but essential travel to Mauritania..
In reality, we are on the ground here in Nouakchott ( the capital city) and all seem very safe and friendly, apart from the mosquitos that is!!
The only advantage I can see regarding these vampire flies, is the fact that when you really want to slap some, you can do it and shout mosquito!
In 2016 a new airport was opened making flying in and out easier, However the still use the original runway, which is also used as a public main road!!
There is a huge camel and fish market, both of which make an interesting visit.
